The scholarship on the history of Protestant missions to Puerto Rico after Spanish American War 1898 emphasizes Americanizing tendencies missionaries in construction new Rican. There is no doubt that main missionary motif during 1890s was indeed civilization. Even though part evangelistic efforts some missionaries, evidence shows a minority among them Presbyterians James A. McAllister and Judson Underwood, had clear vision indigenization/contextualization for emerging church based language (Spanish) culture (Puerto Rican). spread Christianity successful not only because but also native agents took up task evangelizing their own people; they were passive spectators active translating processing message gospel fulfill people’s needs individual cultural assumptions. This article problematizes past divisions such activities between Christianity, mission history, theology by analyzing ministries Adela Sousa (a Bible woman) Miguel Martinez light teachings missionaries. investigation claims Rican agents’ roles process evangelization, fusion emerged as soon converts embraced began preach gospel.
